Getting Started with Law School

Whether you've taken a semester or a few years off from school, it's never too late to apply to law school. Pursuing a law degree can provide new career opportunities, and each year on average, more people apply. It is important to consider your specific circumstances when deciding to apply. There is no single path to law school or career path after graduation.

There are many misconceptions about a career in law, but many KU alumni are interested in law school because of the increased salary potential or opportunities to advocate for others. It is recommended that any person exploring legal careers talk with current professionals. There are often significant differences depending on your firm size, future field of law, and whether you work in a business or private firm, government agency, or non-profit organization. Seek advice early on and gather as much information as you can before applying.

You should also consider the cost of law school. Many individuals view a law degree as an investment in themselves, and you will learn many skills that are transferable to a variety of careers. However, there is a significant cost to attending law school, and career outcomes can vary:

  • Many law programs require full-time enrollment for three years, and most law schools will restrict the number of hours you can work during the semester. The typical expectation is that law school becomes your full-time job.
  • A 2021 report by the American Bar Association (ABA) found that the average law school debt (not including debt from bachelor's or associate's degrees) was $108,000.
  • A recent report by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) found there are significant salary differences for salaries of law graduates after one year. Approximately 50.7% of law graduates were between $50,000 to $90,000, and the median was approximately $115,918.

Weighing the cost of a law degree and your lifetime earnings potential can be helpful. Once you've decided that a law degree aligns with your goals and can support you, you can more confidently take your next steps.
