Pre-Law Advising
Getting Started and Meeting with an Advisor
At KU, undergraduate degree-seeking students are assigned an academic advisor who can assist with selecting classes and helping you keep on track for graduation. They can help you with many academic questions and enhancing your college experience. Schedule an appointment with your academic advising using Jayhawk GPS.
Exploring legal careers? Thinking if law school is right for you? Not sure where to start on your application? Jayhawk Pre-law Advising is available for KU students exploring, preparing, and applying to law school. Pre-law students can meet with a pre-law advisor to talk about their future legal education goals.
Ready for a Pre-Law Advising Appointment?
Jayhawk Academic Advising offers virtual and in-person drop-in advising services for pre-law students. Drop-in advising does not require a scheduled appointment, and students can visit with a pre-law advisor most Mondays and Thursdays in Summerfield Hall 315. Students can also schedule an appointment through the Jayhawk Academic Advising office by emailing advising@ku.edu or calling 785-864-2834.
Once you're ready to meet, it can be helpful to come prepared to your advising appointment. Consider emailing any questions you have ahead of time, especially if you would like assistance with application materials like personal statements. You can also give permission for KU's pre-law advisor to view your Law School Admission Council (LSAC) information.
What I Can I Talk to a Pre-Law Advisor About?
Pre-law advising appointments are individualized, and you can meet with a pre-law advisor for specific questions you have about your pre-law experience at KU. Appointments can be used to explore options for selecting a pre-law major and to explore legal careers. You can meet to prepare for law school and discuss ways to be ready for the LSAT or GRE, consider internship and extracurricular opportunities, and discuss how KU policies like credit/no credit may apply to you. You can meet when you apply to law schools and have questions about selecting programs, letters of recommendation, character and fitness disclosures, and personal statements.
